Perinatal Neurology

Neurological Assessment During the Neonatal Period

Early assessment of neurological findings that arise during the neonatal period, identification of potential risks, and close monitoring of developmental progress are important.

What Is Perinatal Neurology?

Perinatal neurology focuses on the evaluation of neurological problems that may arise from the late stages of pregnancy through the neonatal and early infancy periods. In particular, prematurity, problems occurring during birth, seizures, movement disorders, and developmental risks may require close neurological monitoring.

Early recognition of neurological findings during the neonatal period and regular assessment of the child’s developmental progress can help guide appropriate follow-up and support when necessary.

Certain Findings During the Neonatal Period Should Be Closely Monitored.

Feeding difficulties, differences in muscle tone, seizure-like movements, changes in reflexes, or unexpected developmental findings may require neurological evaluation.

Clinical Evaluation

The newborn’s neurological status, reflexes, muscle tone, and general clinical findings are evaluated.

Developmental Monitoring

The baby’s motor and neurodevelopmental characteristics are monitored according to age and birth history.

Assessment of Seizures and Movements

Seizure-like movements and other abnormal motor findings are evaluated systematically.

Necessary Investigations

Depending on the clinical findings, EEG, imaging, or other diagnostic methods may be used.

Neurodevelopmental Monitoring in Premature Infants

The neurodevelopmental course of premature infants may vary depending on gestational age and clinical conditions after birth. Therefore, early assessment of neurological and developmental characteristics, identification of risks, and establishment of appropriate follow-up when necessary are important.

Especially in high-risk infants, monitoring motor development, movement quality, and other neurodevelopmental indicators over time allows for a more comprehensive assessment of the child’s developmental progress.

Scientific Research in Perinatal Neurology

The neonatal period and early neurodevelopment are among the areas of Prof. Dr. Pınar Gençpınar’s academic work in pediatric neurology. She participates particularly in research on the neurodevelopmental assessment of premature infants, neonatal neurological findings, and neurological problems arising during early development.
